The Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura, CHS (River Segura Hydrographic Confederation, SHC) is designated in the regional Programas Operativos Integrados, POI (Integrated Operational Programmes, IOP) for the Region of Murcia, Region of Valencia, and the Autonomous Regions of Andalusia and Castilla-La Mancha as the end beneficiary of part of the European Regional Development Funds (ERDF) allocated to measure 3.6 and, in the case of the Region of Murcia, measure 3.2.

The SHC, as executive agency, is responsible for managing the projects that may be subsidised within Axis 3 ,“Environment, Natural Surroundings and Water Resources” - measures 3.2, "Improvement of the efficiency of existing infrastructures and of water use" (Murcia) and 3.6, “Protection and regeneration of the environment” (Region of Murcia, Region of Valencia, and the Autonomous Regions of Andalusia and Castilla-La Mancha).
The series of projects to be implemented within the scope of the measures set out in the previous paragraph in the four REGIONAL OPERATIONAL PROGRAMMES, constitutes the “ERDF-SHC 2000-2006 Programme”, which is managed by the Hydrographic Confederation's General Secretariat.

The ERDF-SHC 2000-2006 programme comprises 61 projects that fulfil the objectives set out in the regional IOPs' programme complements, in the management of which the SHC takes part.
Among others: Maintenance of the biodiversity and the processes and vital relations of the ecosystems, giving special priority to areas considered sensitive; promotion of a rational use of natural resources in order to achieve sustainable development; encouragement of ecological uses of the natural environment; environmental improvement of river courses by returning them and their surroundings to their natural state, which has been lost due to the serious pollution suffered over a period of years; enhancement of the biological quality of ecosystems in protected natural spaces; improvement of water quality in turn lessens the efficiency of water volume regulation projects; prevention of floods in urban areas, increasing river water drainage capacity; correction of negative impacts of anthropic activities and reclamation of natural spaces in urban environments; protection of people and towns that are unavoidably subject to potential flooding; improvement of the efficiency of existing infrastructures and water use, etc.
The ERDF-SHC 2000-2006 programme has an investment budget of close to €55 million, of which 95% has already been deployed.

The last programmed project is expected to be completed in mid 2008.
