Computer sub-system

The SAIH-Segura Supervisory Control & Data Acquisition System (SCADA) was specifically designed for the purpose, in Fortran programming language and using the Open VMS operating system. The database chosen was Digital RDB (now Oracle), the computer graphics, GKS (Graphics Kernel System), and the screen format, Dec Forms. This Software was initially used under a Digital MicroVax 6000-510, then in a Digital Alpha Server 1200, and now an Alpha Server DS25. The current SAIH Server is connected to a 1-Gigabit Ethernet LAN, with a tree-like structure which runs lengthways and transversely across the five floors of the Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura building. Users with PCs using a Windows environment access the SAIH system through the network, by connecting to the SAIH server with X-terminal emulation software called eXcursion. Other more specialised users have VaxStation 4000-VLC workstations that connect to the SAIH server through Decnet.

Since its implementation, both the hardware and software have undergone changes. The fundamental criteria adopted in these updates have been the consolidation of the stability of both: hardware and software, the internal expansion in the CHS for their use by the largest possible number of users and the differentiation between the "SAIH computer nucleus" and the different practical computer applications directly or indirectly integrated with the database provided by the SCADA

SAIH functional outcode

The SAIH Functional Outline represents the "computer nucleus". In the following pages, some of the computer applications and utilities that are directly or indirectly inter-related with the SAIH are described and presented, developed entirely by SAIH personnel. These applications, together with the SCADA, make up a powerful hydrological data integration and management tool, including data coming from different sources, formats and contents.
