On April 22, 2026, a workshop on irrigation sustainability was held as part of the public consultation sessions for the document "Provisional Outline of Key Issues," the second milestone of the fourth cycle of the hydrological planning process (2028-2033) in the Segura River Basin District.
The session, led by the head of the Hydrological Planning Office, Jesús García, is part of the series of technical meetings organized by the river basin authority to delve into the main challenges of water use in agriculture, one of the key sectors in the Segura River Basin District.
During the workshop, the main issues related to irrigation sustainability were analyzed, including groundwater exploitation, diffuse nitrate pollution, the status of the Tagus-Segura Water Transfer, water use control, the socioeconomic impact of the measures, and the role of desalination as a structural resource.
The workshop was also available to follow live online via Microsoft Teams.
A total of 32 people attended the workshop, 17 in person and 15 online, representing various entities registered as stakeholders in the Segura River Basin Authority's hydrological planning process.
